PRESIDENT Kath Dunn reported that the visit to the restored Victorian baths in Manchester had been a glimpse back in time with its segregated pools and impressive Art Nouveau tiling and stained glass.

THE speaker was George Hughes on the subject of his time in the Grenadier Guards from 1958. He had some very amusing anecdotes but said that life was quite hard and arduous as a Grenadier Guard with extremely tough discipline and set regimes.

CHAIRMAN Heather Casson told members about a recent holiday, visiting five cathedral cities including Lichfield and the National Arboretum, which impressed her so much that she hopes to arrange a day trip for the club next year.

The winter season of the 8E Railway Association began with a talk by Andrew McFarlane, ambitiously entitled "Preserved Main Line Steam and Preserved Railways". Andrew is a well-known figure on the Mid-Cheshire line through his work with the Mid-Cheshire Rail Users Association. He is also extremely knowledgeable on the railway scene past and present.

Whitley WI learnt about the art and benefits of traditional Chinese acupuncture at their September meeting. The principle is that if you are suffering from pain it is because the body’s Qi (Chi) has been disturbed. The process involves the insertion of very fine needles into the “channels” which Eastern medicine believe flow around your body, helping your Qi to flow and re-establish a balance between the body’s Yin and Yang.

THE Wednesday Club met for a very happy afternoon with a talk about sweet memories. Janet Bradshaw bought a large selection if sweets and talk enthusiastically about the variety of sweets from when they were young. She displayed humbugs, gob stoppers, toffees and many others.

“What do judges look for?” was the title of the first meeting at the 2014/2015 season at Northwich Photographic Society. It was amusing, challenging and stimulating thanks to speaker, Bob Dennis, an old friend of the club. Bob will return in October to judge the first competition so his views on the thorny subject were particularly appropriate.

VICE-president Shelly Farley welcomed members to the September meeting of Comberbach WI and thanked Marjorie Hall for the beautiful flower arrangement on her table. She reported that the August tasty evening had demonstrated members’ culinary talents, providing an array of sweet and savoury dishes to share.
