It was amusing, challenging and stimulating thanks to speaker, Bob Dennis, an old friend of the club. Bob will return in October to judge the first competition so his views on the thorny subject were particularly appropriate.

PRESIDENT Jenny Friar welcomed members to the July meeting at Cuddington and Sandiway WI. Congratulations were given to Thelma Manning for receiving the Citizen Award for Sandiway and Cuddington Village for her fund raising in aid of Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. Her efforts had raised more than £10,000 for the charity.

A PLEASANT outdoor activity, in the form of a garden party, took place at the home of Lach Dennis WI’s President Joy Hoad. Members provided a varied selection of delicious food and drinks including sausages, pies and sandwiches with a strawberry pavlova and a Victoria sandwich cake to round-off the meal. The evening owed much of its success to the benevolent weather.

MEMBERS of Winsford Ladies Midweek Club visited Stonyford Gardens at Oakmere, near Northwich recently. They were met by Andrew Overland who gave a brief history of how his family came to own and transform the hidden valley with its spring fed lake, into the unusual and beautiful garden it is today.

HARRY Watson was speaker for the evening at the recent meeting of Hartford WI. He gave an interesting and informative talk on the work of the North West Air Ambulance Service, a voluntary service which relies on contributions from the public. £6million is needed each year and the Government fund the cost of the onboard medical team. Their advantage is being able to land on difficult terrain and get the injured to hospital extremely quickly. The helicopter travels at around 150 mph and improves a patient’s chance of survival. Harry and his wife volunteer for the service and continually raise funds for the much needed service.

VALE Royal Lions plan to mark their 40th anniversary with even more service to the local community. They donated around £23,000 locally last year and recognise that will be difficult to surpass.

“ALL the nice girls love a sailor” but “there’s something about a soldier”: Whitley WI were rescued at the thirteenth hour, when Kate Madden, a music adviser for CWAC, stepped in to replace the planned speaker who had been taken ill, a couple of hours before their recent meeting.
