WARRINGTON Wolves may be heading for warmer climates this week, but Tony Smith has told his side to expect a jam-packed schedule when they touch down in Tenerife.

However, one man who will not be travelling is Wolves’ longest-serving player Paul Wood, whose request to be released from his contract has been accepted by the club.

Wood will join Championship side Featherstone Rovers.

Wolves fly out on Saturday for a week’s training camp at the Canary Island-complex they have frequented in recent years, making the same trip in 2010, 2011 and 2013 Super League seasons.

Smith will take a large squad to Tenerife, where Wolves expect a full complement after affording those in rehabilitation or on international duty an extended rest.

“We’ll be busy doing two sessions each day,” he said.

“They’ll get one day off while we’re there to relax and we’ll be doing something that day, but it’ll just be a short, sharp one day to recover from pretty hard training.

“The rest of the time it’s double days and a lot of field work. More team-orientated stuff than what we’ve been able to do because we won’t have had everybody back in until then.

“It gives us a chance to do more team skills. We’ll have 24 or 25 players, maybe a few young blokes going, pretty much two teams training against each other out there."

Hooker Andy Ackers has arrived from Swinton Lions on a month’s loan as former England international Wood, who spent 15 years in the first team, heads for the exit.

The 33-year-old started his career at Wilderspool in 2000, and went on to make 339 appearances for the club, he scored 50 tries for Warrington during that spell.

Smith added: “I’d like to thank Paul for his contribution to the club. He’s provided 15 years of great service.

“Paul expressed a desire for a new challenge and this request was granted.

"Competition for places is tough and we need people ready for that challenge.

“There is an exciting time ahead with the new staff, players and improvement of training facilities, therefore we require everyone to be 100 per cent committed to the Warrington cause.

“We wish Paul and his family all the best for the future.”
