A NEW independent group aiming to put 'people before politics' has claimed it is the 'only credible opposition' ahead of May's local elections.

The group Winsford Salt of the Earth, which was formed earlier this year, is putting up 17 candidates to contest all 22 available seats at town and borough council level.

Throughout the history of Winsford Town Council, the Labour Party has held a large majority with the Liberal Democrats forming the main opposition.

However in the 2023 elections, both parties have failed to put up candidates to stand for every available seat.

And according to Winsford Salt of the Earth leader, Old Star landlord and owner Cllr Ernie Welch, this makes his group the 'only credible opposition'.

He said: "The May 4 local elections will see 17 Winsford Salt of the Earth candidates contesting all available 22 seats covering both town and borough positions.

"This provides the option to voters of a full slate of independent Winsford Salt of the Earth candidates, who are not subject to a political party whip.

"Our Winsford Salt of the Earth candidates are a credible alternative to the existing tribalism within the two main parties currently running the town.

"In listening to people locally and having a few months experience of trying to work positively for the town, it was obvious to me that there has to be a better way of running the town we love."

The group also has the endorsement of a former councillor of nine years and two-time town mayor Mike Kennedy.

Mike said: "When your leaflet arrives through your door, get your poster up in your window and show your support for change.

"These candidates are a great bunch of people who are able and determined to implement change from day one.

"They have a solid grasp of the kinds of values and behaviour Winsford residents deserve from their elected representatives and they understand what the priorities of local people are.

"I whole-heartedly support their campaign and wish them all the best."

Candidate Simon Boone, who is managing the campaign, added: "We are already showing how things can be done differently.

"We have run two public meetings, conducted a series of surveys, produced a report on local bus subsidies which has been made available to D&G and Cheshire West executives, and have produced a campaign song and video.

"We have established a presence on Facebook and our first leaflet is currently being delivered to every house in Winsford by our candidates and growing group of supporters."

Cllr Welch added; "We have another public meeting coming up on Tuesday, April 18, and would like to publicly invite any opposition candidates to attend those meetings to answer questions and to challenge us.

"We have installed tablets on the bar at The Old Star for people to use to get registered and sort out their Photo ID but you need to do it soon. Just ask us if you need help."
