A CRASH in which two drivers were seriously injured has prompted renewed warnings over a dangerous crossroads.

Two women suffered ‘life-changing injuries’ in a crash near the Oakmere crossroads on Sunday evening, on the A556 between the junctions of Overdale Lane and the A49.

They were airlifted from the scene near Sandiway to hospital, where they remain in a stable condition with serious injuries.

Sadly, this is not the first accident near the junction, which – as of last year – is covered by a 50mph limit, with the national speed limit either side.

One resident who lives nearby said: “The speed limit is 60mph either side of the crossroads, but people think that unrestricted means 70mph – it’s partially an education problem.

"The signage is pathetic, and it’s just gone from bad to worse – someone is going to be killed.

“I’m not an expert by any means, I’m a driver and I am witnessing so many near misses.

“Sadly, it takes an accident before anyone takes any notice, and I just hope those poor people make a recovery.”

Police were called to the scene around 5.10pm on August 11, and believe a Citroen Cactus travelling eastbound, towards Manchester, crashed with an Audi A6 travelling westbound, towards Chester.

The driver of the Citroen, a 26-year-old-woman from Bolton, and the driver of the Audi, a 81-year-old woman from Utkinton, both sustained life-changing injuries as a result of the collision.

PC Liz Thompson said: “Enquiries in relation to the incident are ongoing and as part of our investigation we want to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either of the vehicles in the moments leading up to the incident.

“We are also appealing for anyone who thinks that they may have dashcam or CCTV footage which may aid our investigation to get in touch.”

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Cheshire Police on 101, quoting incident number IML 483299.

You can send in information and dashcam footage via the Cheshire Police website.

Residents say they would like to see better enforcement of the speed limits, with one saying: “No one wants to see people fined or get points on their licence, but what you do want is for people to use a bit of common sense and consideration for others.”
