WITH just 19 out of 170 West Cheshire Schools having so far acted to adopt the Living Wage of £8.25 an hour for their low-paid support staff, trade unionists from West Cheshire Trades Union Council decided to offer some public encouragement to schools to think about and act on this issue.
They protested outside a workshop/conference for West Cheshire headteachers being held at Hoole Hall Hotel, in Chester on June 7.
As headteachers arrived for the event they were greeted with placards demanding: “Pay School Support Staff the Living Wage!”
and “£8.25 / hour for School Support Staff now!”
The message from the West Cheshire Living Wage Campaign is that local trade unionists are serious about pursuing this issue, and about winning the Living Wage for all school staff.
Headteachers and Governors who think they can ignore the low pay of their support staff (cleaners, catering staff, midday assistants, caretakers, technicians and clerical staff) will find the campaign using all means available to ensure these low paid staff get treated fairly.
