I WAS a primary school teacher and in my time I’ve heard some unbelievable suggestions from politicians regarding education. This latest one should not have surprised me but actually I was appalled.
The Education and Childcare Minister has proposed that children of 11 should be introduced to the subject of “work” as part of a wider effort “to end the cycle of benefit dependency”.
These children are facing enormous changes some of which may well be traumatic; surely they should be allowed to settle into secondary school life before being faced with the subject of work?
I would suggest that as soon as there is the slightest indication that they are giving the subject some sort of airing, that then is the right time to tackle it.
