IN LAST week’s paper a resident wrote in to the Guardian about the Winnington bridge.

I’m pleased to take this opportunity to give readers an update on this.

As regular readers of my local leaflets will know, I started my campaign for investment in Winningon bridge in January.

The traffic here comes to a stand still at busy times of the day.

While Winnington Urban Village is good news (new residents moving to live in this estate built on a brown field site and many of them benefitting from the government’s Help to Buy scheme) the subsequent increase in population meant locals and I were concerned the traffic situation would become even worse.

After mounting my campaign and receiving lots of feedback from local people, I then went to the council about this issue asking for a study into the possibility of investment into this crossing.

In addition, I spoke to the secretary of state for transport and also the Chancellor explaining to both of them the ever more pressing need for investment here to ease congestion.

I should add that our existing bridge is a landmark of traditional build, and as such I feel strongly that any improvements made must be sympathetic to the historic nature of the existing structure.

Those readers familiar with the Sutton Weaver bridge will know that my campaign with the local councillors in Frodsham produced a very much improved traffic flow whilst also retaining the integrity of the original structure.

I feel that this is what we could do with in Winnington. Since my re-election in May, I have continued to lobby for this investment – indeed I met with the chancellor soon after the election to discuss this bridge.

Rest assured I shall continue to press for this, and will keep you updated with any progress made. If you would like to add your name to the growing list of supporters for my Winnington Bridge campaign please email info@grahamevansmp.com.
