THERE is an old saying ‘better late than never’ and perhaps this is the case with the news that George Osborne has now lent his support to the growing campaign to build an improved crossing over the Weaver between Barnton and Winnington.
I have no doubt that Cheshire West and Chester Council would be keen to take up any offer of assistance and welcome any discussions with the Secretary of State for Transport that both, he or his fellow MP Graham Evans would care to facilitate.
After all, neither Winnington Bridge or improvements to the A533 link to Runcorn in this area were even considered important enough to include in the £431 million Mersey Gateway programme when it was announced three years ago despite the impact a second Runcorn Bridge will have on traffic flows in Northwich.
So here is the perfect opportunity to correct this oversight.
