OUR new Memorial Court building is certainly a subject for debate.

I think it is a typical example of an architect being carried away by his personal creative vision.

He seems to have completely forgotten that it should in most people's eyes, fit in with the historical building style, so that it is at least harmonious with the neighbouring buildings but still in a modern in style.

I think the word required is subtlety.

The fact is, the design concept, could still reflect the black and white local theme without losing all the advantages of modern design and technology, instead of standing out as the monstrosity it now is.

Its sheer size and colour are overwhelming to start with, and the attempt to reflect the nature of salt as a visual element has failed completely in my view: the whole thing looks like it has been built from a giant Lego kit!

I would say forget Courbusier, this is Northwich, England, not Marseilles in the south of France.

What we have now simply looks cheap and nasty, and I still think it most resembles a huge warehouse which would look more at home on an industrial estate.
