I SHOULD be grateful to use the Guardian to thank a number of people who helped me recently.

On Friday morning my car broke down in the middle of Princess Street in Knutsford, blocking the road.

I am a disabled driver, but within minutes a passing lady grasped the situation and took over with magnificent cool efficiency.

She took me into Geralds the jewellers, where the staff looked after me with understanding, as though immobilised, distressed drivers were routine.

Meanwhile, the lady recruited a team who pushed the car to safety into Silkmill Market.

She printed a large notice telling the RAC that the keys were at Geralds, whose staff had meanwhile phoned the RAC for me.

The lady also telephoned my wife and reassured her in the most considerate way.

She retrieved my shopping from the boot of the car and left it with me at the jewellers, where I was kept relaxed and entertained while waiting for a taxi that the staff had mustered up to take me home.

The lady was “Jane” who works in Knutsford and lives in Middlewich.

Aren’t people wonderful! Thanks to everyone.
