I WAS pleased to read that the subway below Chesterway and Watling Street may be filled in as part of the Memorial Court development.

The subway has the appearance of a World War Two bunker and it’s no surprise that people don’t like it.

I would rather use a surface crossing and at present take a chance on crossing Chesterway and Watling Street by means of existing crossings, e.g. by the Police Station.

Crossings similar to those at the junctions of London Road and Castle Street with the one-way system could be installed when the junction by the Seafarer Restaurant is made permanent.

This would not cause additional delays to traffic as there are already controls at this junction.

The filling in of the subway would provide a number of benefits.

Firstly, it would provide an opportunity to get rid of some of the hideous concrete structures at this junction.

Secondly, the sharp left hand corner where traffic turns on to the gyratory system from Watling Street could be eased.

Finally it would rid the town of another “grot spot” where frequent maintenance is required to remove graffiti, litter and the occasional flood.

I sincerely hope this proposal gets the go-ahead.
