NORTHWICH Victoria’s home ground has been bought by a company based on the same street.
David Hewitt, managing director of Thor Specialities UK, contacted the Guardian this afternoon to confirm that the firm had agreed a deal to buy the Victoria Stadium.
He could have the keys before the end of the month.
“We are the purchasers of the ground,” he said.
Mr Hewitt added that he did not wish to comment further until the company, part of chemicals manufacturer Thor Group Ltd, had issued a full statement tomorrow, Thursday.
The Guardian understands that workers at the Wincham site were told earlier today that rumours in the town about the deal were true.
Last night a spokesman for finance experts Deloitte Touche, de facto landlords at the nine-acres site since October 2008, said they had instructed bailiffs to repossess the land.
An eviction notice served on Monday asked the club, whose team has played at the stadium since 2005, to vacate the premises before the weekend.
“We’ve waited several years for Vics to come up with the money,” said Deloitte’s Dan Butters last night.
“It’s not happened, so we’ve been left with no option but to consider other offers.”
Fans of the football club said today that they needed to know more before deciding how best they can help.
Northwich Victoria Supporters’ Trust chairman Paul Stockton said: “It’s important that we find out as much information as we can so we’re better placed to act.”
More to follow.
