STEVE King did not hide his disappointment after Vics’ derby day capitulation.

The hosts were sunk by a single goal from Greg Young as Alty left the Marston’s Arena with maximum points for the second successive season.

“We were rubbish,” he said.

“We seem to play better football away from home, here we just resort to the long ball and it’s very depressing.

“We’re just launching it aimlessly and it’s unacceptable.”

The game’s sole moment of magic – Young applying the finishing touch to a slick set piece routine – was enough to secure victory for Graham Heathcote’s men.

It was no less than they merited.

“We didn’t deserve anything,” added King.

“They got the three points and I’ve no complaints because we didn’t even look like scoring a goal.

“We are toothless in attack.

“Look at Alty – I thought the kid Johnson had a great game for them.

“Our central defenders knew they had been in a game because he battered them all over the pitch, but their two centre halves didn’t even break sweat.

The four-figure crowd – Vics’ second biggest gate of the season – were subdued for a game usually reserved for feisty tackles and tantrums.

King told the Guardian he expected more from his side.

“There was no heart, no fight and no desire,” he said.

“It’s not good enough, the minimum requirement for any game is to go out and work very hard.

“Where did you seen a tackle fly in?

“We’re too nice – it’s a derby game and I don’t remember a single moment where I’ve seen passion out there.”

He had one moment of rancour for the referee after an equaliser was chalked off for a foul on Alty keeper Stuart Coburn.

“We had a blatant goal disallowed,” he said.

“Their keeper punched the ball into the net – that makes it 1-1 and we nick a point we don’t deserve.

“Maybe that would have been the bit of luck we needed.”
