THE time is right for Vics supporters to start their own version of their favourite team, according to a councillor.

Terry Murphy told members of Northwich Town Council this week that he was behind a fans group about to ask its members to vote in favour of a starting again.

“I personally think the supporters should start a new team,” he said.

“They probably should have done so months ago but made the decision that while the old Vics is still going they wouldn’t.

“Of course I can understand that.”

Members listened to a presentation by Paul Stockton, chairman of Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust, about the proposals for the future.

He asked councillors if he could return should his fellow fans vote in favour of a motion for a new club at a Special General Meeting tomorrow, Thursday.

Clr Murphy added: “Any new team would have to be a community one because of where it will start.

“It’s going to take a lot of work, but it can happen.

“There are a lot of people willing to help if you do.”

Mr Murphy, chief scout for Vics’ town rivals Witton Albion and former Northwich manager in the 1980s, said his current club could play a part in helping a new version of Vics to become established.

He said: “Witton would help if they could – I know that for a fact – if Northwich could get into a decent league to start with.

Clr Murphy closed by saying that he did not think the same offer of assistance could be made by Witton to the existing club.

“With Jim Rushe in charge, there’s no chance,” he added.
