WITTON Albion will hail their 50 greatest players ahead of the club’s centenary in 2012.

The Wincham Park outfit has set aside space in its newly-refurbished social club to for action images of their most influential stars.

“It’s our way of saluting the contribution these guys have made to the club,” said chairman Mark Harris.

“The reaction we’ve had so far, both from the players themselves and also our supporters, has been wholly positive.”

He told the Guardian that the idea was borne from a regular feature in Albion’s match day programme written by historian Phil Chadwick.

In it he chronicles the achievements of individual players from teams past.

Harris revealed that those tales will now be brought together as part of a book to be published at the end of next year.

He said: “It’s very much Phil’s project and after a couple of years cajoling him, he’s agreed to write the book.

“We want the club’s history to have some presence in the social club and this seemed the perfect way to achieve that.”

The first players nominated include Mark Edwards, John Goryl, Alan Haspell, Keith Higgins, Paul Lodge, Keith Mason, Mike Moseley and Mark Radcliffe.

They were guests at Albion’s Evo-Stik League Division One North clash with Harrogate Railway Athletic last month.

A second selection of greats will be unveiled at Witton’s date with Trafford in December.
