CARL Macauley, Witton Albion’s manager, told his players not to worry after they missed a glut of chances during Wednesday’s draw at Kidsgrove Athletic.

The visitors were on course to record a fourth successive victory in the Northern Premier League after establishing a two-goal lead by the break.

However Harry Clayton’s second-half double, including an equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time, secured a point for a Grove side that remains unbeaten in 2017.

Albion hit the woodwork twice, and spurned a long list of other opportunities to score when they dominated the closing stages.

Macauley said: “We should have seen the game out, we know that.

“As a manager, you want to see cool heads in those final few minutes but we perhaps just lost ours.

“To concede in the way we did, with a free header at a corner, is difficult to take.

“However a point is ok, and I’m happy with our performance.

“It would only be a massive concern to me if we weren’t getting ourselves into a position to score. We did, and often.”

A 2-2 draw brought to an end a testing 10-day sequence in which Witton played Newcastle Town and Basford – both direct rivals for a promotion play-offs place.

They made a long trip to Lincoln United in between before ending the run at Kidsgrove, one of Division One South’s form teams after avoiding defeat in each of their previous five matches.

Macauley said: “We’ve taken 10 points from those games, and in my view that’s a great return.

“It’s important we keep our chins up because teams above us, and those just below, will drop points.”

Albion host Bedworth this Saturday, kick off 3pm.
