PAUL Warhurst has walked out on Northwich Victoria.

The former Sheffield Wednesday star told the Guardian he felt he could not carry on as temporary manager after a meeting with chairman Mike Connett yesterday, Wednesday.

He had been in charge just over a week.

"I had a long chat with Mike," said Warhurst.

"The financial circumstances of the club mean we can't bring any new players in to improve the team.

"I felt we needed to do that to make progress so it's a very disappointing ending from a personal point of view."

Vics won their first match of the campaign against Winsford United on Tuesday, running in four goals against their near neighbours.

Warhurst felt he could turn things around, but changed his mind the following day.

"The club needed shaking up after a poor start to the season," he said.

"But obviously the financial situation is such that Mike felt he couldn't do that."

Dino Maamria will be in charge of the team for Saturday's Blue Square Premier clash with Woking.

He becomes Vics' third manager of a troubled campaign, which has yielded a single point after 11 matches.

Mike Connett said bringing yet more new players in at this stage of the season was a risky strategy.

"We are restricted to getting people who are not playing for anybody or going for more loan signings," he said.

"If players are unattached how good can they really be?"

Vics have already made four loan signings - Andy Murphy, Michael Coulson, Simon Heslop and Gareth Evans. The limit for the season is eight.

But the loan transfer window is currently closed, meaning new faces can only come in on those terms if a current player picks up a serious injury.

"Lee Steele, Jonny Allan and Michael Welch are due back shortly to boost numbers," he added.

"We have to move forward with the squad we have now."
