KNUTSFORD ace Oliver Webb kept up with the quickest cars at the first World Series Renault (WSR) group test this week.

The teenager, making his official debut behind the wheel of Catalan outfit Pons Racing’s latest Formula Renault 3.5 challenger, topped the timesheet briefly at the Motorland Aragon track in Spain.

“I’m happy,” he declared afterwards.

“It was a strong test for us and I can’t wait to continue developing the car.”

He heads to Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya for a two-days test from Tuesday.

The British F3 International series graduate posted the fastest time on new tyres during the first session at the 5km circuit, clocking 1:43.467.

He was unable to improve upon that in the afternoon though due to a brake system fault.

The second day’s testing continued as the first had ended, with the 19-year-old struggling to solve the same problem.

“There were teething problems,” he said.

“But the Pons guys did a great job identifying them and then sorting them out so I could record some faster times by the end of the day.

“I felt really comfortable by the close.”

He switched back to the previous day’s set up on fresh tyres to finish, setting a time of 1:42.810 to briefly top the timesheets before eventually finishing in second spot.

However his result was adjusted after the car was found to be too light in post-test scrutineering.

Of Webb’s rivals, Daniel Ricciardo enjoyed a successful introduction to his new team ISR by twice breaking the lap record on the second day.

The Australian peaked with a 1:42.237 before lunch.

Alexander Rossi (Fortec) and Albert Costa (Epsilon Euskadi) completed the top three in the morning, while Cesar Ramos (Fortec) and Robert Wickens (Carlin) followed Ricciardo’s best time in second and third position respectively in the afternoon.
