MID-CHESHIRE B’s hopes of being promoted back to the Federation National League’s third tier at the first attempt were hit after they lost to Bury.
They are second in Division Four following a 20-12 reverse, but each of the teams below them in the table have a game in hand.
In the home leg, at Castle Private, the distance between the teams on aggregate was a slender two chalks after Bury adapted in impressive fashion to return six winners.
Jan Wakefield (Frodsham Red Lion) was the best performer for Mid-Cheshire, beating Craig Brennan (Buchanan) 21-8.
Chris Cain (Crewe PO), Stuart Morrey (Barnton CC), Barry Ellis (Frodsham Red Lion) and Ian Wassell (Sandbach Park) reached 21 in the away encounter at Elton Liberal Club.
Colin Peters (Comberbach) lost to 20 and Bev Chesters (Hop Pole) to 19 in a 235-201 reverse.
Mid-Cheshire B complete their campaign against Doncaster later this month.
