MATTHEW Langridge promised there is more to come after guiding Great Britain’s men’s four to a gold medal at the season’s first World Cup regatta.

The Northwich rower stroked the reigning world champion crew to a comfortable victory on the water in Bled, Slovenia, on Sunday.

“We still want to get to where we were last year and I don't think we're quite there yet,” he said.

“But this is a good step.”

Langridge’s quartet, including Knutsford rower Ric Egington, Alex Gregory and Alex Partridge, opened up a one second lead over Serbia early on.

But their rivals clawed back, forcing the British four to dig deep in the race’s final section to take victory.

Canada completed the top three.

GB Rowing head coach Jurgen Grobler stood in as the crew’s trainer in the absence of injured Mark Banks.

Langridge quipped: “Having the best in the world look after you is not a bad stand-in.”

His boat’s win was one of nine for Great Britain – six silver medals and one bronze completed the set – who took the overall World Cup trophy.

"Overall it was a very pleasing weekend and shows the depth of the squad and our consistency,” said GB Rowing performance director David Tanner.

The next World Cup regatta is in Munich from June 18.
