TUESDAY night saw Winsford United beat Barnton in the Mid Cheshire Senior Cup Final at Barton Stadium.

Winsford booked their place in the final with a 3-0 home win against Northwich Victoria whereas Barnton beat high opposition in 1874 Northwich 2-0.

Following early pressure from Barnton, the Blues settled into the game with Nathan Cotterell going close.

The hosts didn’t have to wait too long until the opening goal – with 15 minutes on the clock, the ball found its way out to Ryan Jackson.

The winger cut inside the onrushing defender before slotting the ball inside the near post to give Winsford the perfect start.

The remainder of the first half saw chances come and go for the Blues, with Cotterell going close on multiple occasions.

he right-hand side partnership of Dylan Chalice and Jackson caused Barnton problems all half. It was the latter who fed Adam Barlow in the dying stages of the half and he forced Aaron Lyons into a superb diving save.

From the corner, Lyons was forced into action again, denying Winsford captain Steve Jenyons with a reflex save from close range to keep the score at 1-0 heading into the break.

It took until the hour mark for the next opportunity after a cagey start to the half from both sides.

Jackson, who had the beating of his man all night, flashed his cross across goal with only a touch required to divert it goalwards.

David Short had the best opportunity of the half by getting on the end of Jackson’s cross, but yet again Lyons was on hand to deny the Blues striker.

As the game approached the final 10 minutes, Ryan Hamer in the Winsford goal was called into action. A through ball towards the Barnton striker saw Hamer race out and fearlessly dive at the feet of the attacker.

In stoppage time, Barnton pushed for an equaliser but it was Winsford who secured the victory in stoppage time in style with a screamer from Jenyons to cap off a brilliant victory for Lee Duckworth’s side.
