WAYNE Goodison has hailed the way 1874 Northwich’s young players have stepped up in the absence of older teammates that are still recovering from injury.

Their display at West Didsbury & Chorlton on Tuesday night saw them comfortably progress to the FA Cup first qualifying round for the first time in the club’s short history.

More than half of the starting line-up in midweek was under 24 – the average age of the 11 players that took to the field from the first minute.

And two of those, Jake Parker and Adam Whitlock, were on target in a 3-1 win.

“That game was a good example of what we’re about,” said the Northwich co-manager.

“We don’t know any other way to play; our two wide players, Taylor Kennerley and Adam [Whitlock], have great ability, and we give them freedom to show it.

“These are young lads gaining valuable experience.

“Ben Woods is another; I’ve heard and read what people have said about him, but I know he’s god enough.

“Perhaps our lack of experience means we’ll get caught out somewhere along the line, but I don’t mind providing we keep learning from the mistakes we make.”

1874 are preparing to host a Padiham side in disarray following the resignation late on Friday of manager Steve Wilkes and his coaching staff.

The Storks have had a disappointing start to the season, losing all three of their matches to date.

And they will start this afternoon’s encounter as second-favourites following Wilkes’ untimely departure.

Goodison added: “I know there is a feeling that West Didsbury are a better side this season than they have been in previous years.

“And I think they have improved, but then we have too – and massively.

“That’s a positive sign for the club.

“The lads know the jobs they have to do; their attitude has been spot on, and they’ve shown they’re intelligent too.”
