A FRESH bid to redevelop the site of the former Sudbrook Paper Mill has been lodged with Monmouthshire council.

The developer behind the scheme wants to build 209 homes on the site.

Harrow Estates Ltd originally wanted to build 340 homes on the site of the paper mill, which closed in 2006, after 50 years and was demolished three years later.

The scheme was refused by the council in 2012 amid concerns that the development would treble the size of the village. A subsequent appeal against the decision was dismissed by the minister in 2014, following a four day public inquiry.

The current proposal would see a reduced number of two, three and four bedroom Redrow Homes built on the site, together with reconfigured access and the creation of new roads, footpaths, cycle ways, car parking, a network of public spaces and highway improvements.

GVA, acting on behalf of Harrow Estates Ltd, said the development presents a significant opportunity to provide much needed new homes on previously developed land within existing settlement limits.

The firm said the new application responds to the reasons for the dismissal by Welsh ministers as part of the appeal and seeks to ensure that the site’s potential is maximised by making the best and most effective use of the brownfield site.

Ben Lewis, on behalf of GVA, said that extensive talks have been held with Monmouthshire council and that the new design shows a redesigned access point.
