SAM James was a star turn for Northwich Amateur Swimming Club during the Cheshire County Swimming Championships, held at Macclesfield.

The 15-year-old was fastest in his age class for the 50m freestyle, timing 25.34s, and 50m breaststroke.

For the latter, he lowered the previous county best to 31.33s.

A runners-up place in the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle followed, with third in the 100m breaststroke completing an impressive individual performance.

Nick Law reached two finals, scooping a silver medal in the under 14s boys’ 100m backstroke after clocking 1:06.28.

He was fifth too in the 100m freestyle final.

The 14-year-old also set the third fastest time in the heats for both 50m and 200m backstroke.

Joe Korta was runner-up in the under 15s boys’ 200m backstroke, placing third for the same stroke over 100m too.

Also representing Northwich, Will Hutchin was third quickest in the under 15s boys’ 50m freestyle.

In the relays, a Northwich quartet provided the perfect parting gift for coach Mick Hodges.

Sam James, Joe Korta, Will Hutchin and Connor Hanson defended an under 16s boys’ 200m freestyle title they won during last year’s championships, setting a new county best of 1:41.82.

The foursome scooped bronze in the same age category for the 200m medley relay too.
