NINE excited young writers from six schools in Knutsford brought their families to Knutsford Heritage Centre on November 4 to see them receive their prizes after they impressed judges in the annual short story competition.

In the third year of the short story writing competition, 330 stories were read by KHC volunteers.

The winners were chosen from a short list of 20 with Bexton School, Yorston, St Vincents and Knutsford Academy coming out as winners.

Charlotte Peters Rock and Guardian news editor James Wilson were the main judges.

Charlotte read out the winning stories, by Matilda Hinds, Annemieke de Jong, and Ciara Jackson.

King Canute and Highwayman Higgins made an appearance in the form of Geoff Holman and David Cowgill.

Val Dawson, from the heritage centre, said: “We’d like to thank Waterstones in Knutsford and Mr Simms sweetshop for donating the prizes.”

The runner-up in Year 3 and 4 was Jamie Angus from Bexton, with class mate Max Dougall highly commended.

Bexton’s Harriet Edmondson was runner-up in the Year 5 and 6 category, with Cai Evans highly commended.
