Cuddington & Sandiway WI by Elizabeth Brown
Cuddington and Sandiway WI were privileged to hear about the work of the Children’s Adventure Farm Trust at their recent meeting. Ex-teacher and Radio 5 presenter, Graham Simister and his wife told of the aims of the trust, which are to give under-privileged and handicapped children the chance of a week’s holiday in the country away from their usual environment.
A farm near Lymm has been completely renovated to provide accommodation for up to 26 children and their carers.
The animals are the main focus and the first activity is usually to go and collect eggs for breakfast. This is a source of wonder to some city children who have never even seen a hen. They meet sheep, ducks, alpaca's and a special breed of miniature donkey which they are able to touch and talk to. This contact is very therapeutic and brings smiles to every face. There is a special gym, arts centre, sensory room and play areas adapted to cope with every handicap. Graham brought fluffy ‘dinky’ donkey toys along to sell and they were soon snapped up by members.
The Christmas lunch was discussed and members were encouraged to serve on next year’s committee. Tickets were on sale for the group meeting. Dates were given for the walk and lunch bunch. The October meeting will be the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the WI. Visitors are very welcome, call 01606 888446 for more information.
