President Ruth Cairns welcomed members to the October meeting of Bostock & District WI, which was the Produce and Handicraft Show.

Members had three sections to choose from: Horticulture, Produce and Art/Craft. Guest judges were Mary Hignett and Norma Dent, who confirmed that the standard of work and presentation was extremely high. There were some beautiful autumn foliage displays, pot plants and blooms, Swiss rolls, quiches and yoghurt fruit scones.

As if that was not enough, there were poems, hand-made jewellery and knitted Twiddle Muffs! Members had worked very hard and put on a wonderful display. The overall winner of the evening was Alison Middleton, with Lillian Norbury in second place and Margaret Webb third. Ruth gave a vote of thanks to Mary and Norma for sharing their expertise and time.

While the judging was taking place, members took part in an entertaining, fun, and educational quiz set by Jenny Kennerley, which had a produce theme!

Next year will be the centenary of the WI, and to celebrate the 100 years, everyone was given a peek at the Banner which some very clever members had made. Everyone agreed to do a bit of decorating on the individual pennants, some of which have already been finished, and are a credit to the members.

The meeting ended with a very nice appraisal of all the entries by Norma and Mary.

The next meeting will be the AGM on November 25. The competition for the Margaret Dickens Cup will also be held, the subject is to be an animal photograph.
