THE speaker was George Hughes on the subject of his time in the Grenadier Guards from 1958. He had some very amusing anecdotes but said that life was quite hard and arduous as a Grenadier Guard with extremely tough discipline and set regimes.

He displayed his tunic and bearskin and spoke of the 5 Guards Regiments which are identified by the position of their tunic buttons.

He told that when the Queen is in residence guards are in pairs and when she is not, they are single. The ceremony of the Keys of the Tower is steeped in tradition and that Grenadiers are never to say ‘Yes’ only ‘Sir’ in response to senior officers.
