PRESIDENT Pam Lamb, welcomed members and thanked Trudie and the team for decorating the hall so beautifully.

They worked hard putting up Union Jack flags, bunting and posters to create the right atmosphere for the members evening commemorating the First World War.

Cicely Peover, narrator for the evening started by reminding members of the cause of the conflict.

Her journey from 1914-1918 was interspersed with music from the time by well known local soprano singer, Barbara Turner.

There were also readings and poetry by Elva Parkes, Ros McFarlane, Sheila Hart, Margaret Wright, Barbara Bentley and Suzanne Pitts.

Mavis Williams provided piano accompaniment and Barbara encouraged members to sing along to their favourites.

Cicely told of the terrible conditions that the soldiers endured and that when they returned, many visited music halls and theatres to try and lift their spirits.

Barbara finished the evening singing Rule Britannia with members waving and singing along.

Everyone agreed that it had been a really memorable evening.

Mavis Green had researched a cookery book from the time which was funny, it was no ordinary book but one to win the war and it finished with a message from the King.

Tea and homemade Victoria sponge cake was enjoyed, thanks were given to Pam Foster for the beautiful red, white and blue flower arrangement.

Tina Adshead reminded members that a piece of needlework with an Olympic theme is required for the Vale Royal Group meeting on October 15 when the speaker will be Chris Knight and a talk entitled ‘My Olympic Dream’, tickets are available now.

Items are needed for car boot sale in August, please bring them to the July meeting.

Diary dates: June 27, Pye, open garden, tea and cake; July 26, Mavis Green, open garden, tea, cake and produce sale; an outing to Dunham Massey has been booked for October 6.
