HOMES, businesses and a busy road network were plunged into darkness on Sunday night when a power cut hit Kingsmead.

About 1,000 properties were affected by a cable fault at about 11.30pm, which also cut off the electricity supply to street lamps and traffic lights.

Kingsmead resident Emily Smith, also a waitress at The Kingfisher, in Kingsmead Square, said: “It was really weird.

“We’d just settled down to watch a film and thought it was the electricity in the flats but when we looked out of the window it was everywhere, all the street lamps.

“It must have been for about an hour.

“I wasn’t at work but I was talking to the person on duty and they said they were in the office when it went completely black.”

A Northwich motorist said on Sunday: “There’s a major blackout in kingsmead tonight.

“It was quite eery driving through – no traffic lights or street lamps, homes in darkness.”

Cheshire West and Chester Council called out its contractors when it received reports that street lamps were out at Davenham roundabout.

A spokesman for Scottish Power said: “There were about 1,000 customers affected by the power cut.

“It looks like there was a cable fault in the area, it came in at about 11.30pm.

“The vast majority of customers were off for 10 minutes and about 100 were back on just after midnight.

“We had our engineers out quite quickly so managed to get it back on quickly but we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
