A BUTTERFLY garden opened to the public to mark National Buddleia Day on Sunday.

The garden, at the Lion Salt Works, in Marston, is home to the Cheshire Buddleia Collection and has been developed during the past two years by butterfly enthusiast George Martin and a team of volunteers.

George said: “The Cheshire Buddleia collection at the salt works incorporates more than 50 plants and 38 species which is not only attracting butterflies but much local interest.

“These are exciting times for the Lion Salt Works as it is restored into a heritage attraction.

“While it will be two years before the restoration is complete, my Butterfly Team is very excited about being a part of this fantastic new local tourist venue.”

Sally Buttifant, community rail officer, said: “I am always looking out for niche tourist destinations that visitors can travel to by train.

“When the Lion Salt Works opens, I expect many visitors to use the train as the site is not far from Northwich Station and it is a lovely walk along the Trent and Mersey Canal from Lostock Gralam Station.”

Sally also spoke to George about the possibility of planting another butterfly garden at Lostock Gralam Station.

John Hulme, a board member of the Lion Salt Works Trust and a member of the Mid Cheshire Community Rail Partnership, said: “Many people pass through Lostock on the train each day and to see Lostock Gralam Station emerging as the ‘Gateway to the Lion Salt Works and the Cheshire Buddleia Collection’ would certainly increase the awareness of this soon to be restored visitor attraction.”
