WOMEN’S rugby and music from Northwich’s biggest band will entertain visitors on the second day of a town festival.

In last week’s Guardian we featured the entertainment planned for the opening of Northwich Festival on August 24.

This week the spotlight falls on what will be on offer at Moss Farm on the Saturday, August 25.

The day will start at 10am with colts and women’s rugby tournaments and the entertainment will continue into the evening when the band Beaver play in the festival marquee.

Karen Gooch, chairman of Northwich Rugby Club minis and junior section and manager of the ladies’ secion for the past 12 months, has been organising the ladies’ tournament.

She is hoping for teams from all over the British Isles to compete in the games, with women from Kiddiminster, Nottingham and Liverpool confirmed and teams from Plymouth, Devon and Chesterfield hoping to attend.

Karen said: “We play games throughout the day and try to have as much fun as possible.

“It’s about going out and playing and having a good laugh while we’re doing it – it’s a great pre-season gathering.

“We have music playing when we walk on to the pitch and when we score tries.

“When we finish we get changed into costumes for the evening – this year we’re all getting dressed up as cartoon characters.

“So we’re looking at 100 to 150 ladies, potentially even more, staying over for the night.

“In conjunction with Beaver playing as the live band it should be an absolutely belting night.”

Beaver will be on stage from 8pm to midnight with tickets for the gig priced £5.

Sam Naylor, festival chairman, said: “They’re the biggest band in Northwich with the biggest following – they’re an excellent band.”

• Organisers are also planning a classic car extravaganza on the Bank Holiday Monday of the festival. A large paddock will be set aside for classic cars, American vehicles, custom or modified cars and special interest vehicles bikes and autojumble. Entry will be free to exhibitors.
