A GREYHOUND was left fighting for its life when it was attacked by a rottweiler during a Sunday afternoon walk in Leftwich.

Police are appealing for witnesses after Seamus, a 10-year-old greyhound, was left with horrific injuries which mean he cannot sit or stand unaided.

Rebecca Sheridan, Seamus’ owner, said: “We don’t know how bad it will get with Seamus yet.

“He’s got a big hole in him and his muscles are on show – it’s going to be a long, slow healing process.

“He can’t sit down by himself, we have to lift him up and lie him down.

“He had to have hundreds of stitches. He’s like a patchwork quilt. The other dog’s owner couldn’t even get him off my dog, and he wasn’t a small man.”

Rebecca, 31, was walking Seamus and her other dog, a lurcher called Sniffer, in a field off Dobells Road when the attack happened about 4pm on Sunday, November 14. Both of Rebecca’s dogs were on leads.

She said: “As my mum and I went towards the field there was a rottweiler loose there and it made a beeline for us, took my dog down and ripped into him. My other dog and the rottweiler locked jaws and it was over, but if it hadn’t been for Sniffer, Seamus would have been dead. Seamus wouldn’t hurt a fly, he’s the gentlest, loveliest creature you could meet and he didn’t deserve that.”

Rebecca said the attacking dog may have been a rottweiler-cross as she said it had shorter legs than she would have expected.

The dog and its owner disappeared after the attack PCSO Angela Richardson said: “The injuries inflicted on the greyhound were horrific.

“We are obviously concerned about the behaviour of the dog which carried out the attack and the possibility of this incident being repeated.”
