SCARED residents have hit back at the council’s refusal to help make their Winsford street safe.

Eleven affordable homes have been built in Abbotts Way – a notoriously narrow road – leaving little room for cars to manoeuvre.

A temporary one-way system was put in place while the work was carried out, along with slow signs but Winsford town councillor Des Worthington said Cheshire West and Chester Council has refused to let them stay.

He said: “This is a very dangerous road. When driving in and out of the service area, vision is very restricted at more than three points.

“They are just being bloody-minded. It’s crazy, absolutely crazy. We want some traffic calming but highways told us it’s too expensive. We said what if we paid for it ourselves but we were told we couldn’t do that.

“Everyone is up the wall, it’s just ruined the quality of life. It’s really stressing people out. It’s been going on for so long but now it’s coming to its fruition.”

He added: “If highways don’t let us have something to slow the traffic down it’s going to be a nightmare. There will be a serious accident.”

The former borough council turned the plans down after more than 200 people objected amid fears it would be a ‘build too far’.

But the planning inspectorate overturned the decision.

Clr Worthington added: “This just isn’t fair on the residents that have lived here all their lives. They didn’t sign up for this.

“They feel they have been dumped on by the trust from a great height.”

A spokesman for Cheshire West and Chester said it will look at the issues that have been raised.
