THE Guardian has received an anonymous letter giving possible clues as to the identity of Jock Straiton’s third killer.

Full details of the typed letter cannot be published for legal reasons, however the two sheets of A4 paper have been handed to police.

The author claims to have been at the fateful 40th birthday party at Winnington Rec, which preceded the violent death of the 59-year-old grandfather outside his home in Park Road in July 2008.

Although we cannot divulge specific information, we can say that the writer criticised the police’s failure to attend the panicked 999 calls made by residents, and the fact that Lauren Randals and Craig Douglas – who were with the group at the time of the attack – were allowed to leave the scene.

The letter states: “I was a guest at that party, but unfortunately left at 12.30am. I am a good friend to all the families involved and therefore wish to remain anonymous for the present time, but that places me in a unique position to understand this very serious matter.

“The reason Nigel Goolding and Joshua Spruce are in prison, and the killer is walking free, is due to some coincidental circumstances and some poor police work. The clues are all there.”

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said until someone comes directly to them, or via Crimestoppers, with fresh evidence the case will remain closed.

He said: “All the available evidence was heard at court. Two men were convicted of murder, a third acquitted.

“Should anyone feel they have any new and additional information that could lead to other people being prosecuted, they should contact police on 0845 458 0000."
