THE water supply at six properties has been affected after a burst main caused 'extensive' damage to a road.

The incident in Lach Dennis was reported to police at 10.44am this morning, with the caller describing 1.2m hole had appeared in a road.

Officers attended the scene and closed off Holmes Chapel Road in both directions, between the junctions of Crowders Lane and Birches Lane, near the Cheshire Grill Country Pub & Steakhouse.

Reporting the incident to United Utilities and Cheshire West and Chester Council, police officers remained at the scene directing traffic away from the incident.

Once made aware, United Utilities dispatched a repair team to Birches Lane, where the burst main was located.

A United Utilities spokeswoman said: "Following reports of a leak on Birches Lane, police closed the B5082 Holmes Chapel Road.

"Traffic management and a repair team are going to the scene and will be working to repair and reopen the road as soon as possible.

"There are six properties where the water supply has been affected. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

A Cheshire Police spokesman said it was reported 'extensive' damage had been done to the road.

He added: "The B5082 Holmes Chapel Road is currently closed in both directions in Lach Dennis due to a burst water main.

"The incident has been reported to United Utilities and Highways, and motorists are advised to avoid the area."

A CWAC highways spokesman said: "Cheshire Police requested a road closure for a water leak on Holmes Chapel Road (by The Cheshire Grill) this morning.

"Cheshire West and Chester Council closed the road and United Utilities were notified to make the repairs."
