THE air ambulance was called out to a ‘serious’ crash on the M6 which is seeing trapped cars turned around.

The crash was reported just before midday on the southbound carriageway between junctions 16, for Crewe, and junction 15, for Stoke-on-Trent.

As well as the air ambulance, police, fire, and paramedics were all called to the scene.

National Highways North West reported a second ‘minor’ crash on the northbound carriageway shortly after the first, and though this has now been cleared and the carriageway re-opened, drivers travelling north have been warned to expect delays.

National Highways also reported a large number of drivers out of their vehicles in the road, which they say is adding to delays.

A tailback of nine miles has been reported, along with delays of 90 minutes, while vehicles caught within the closed junctions are turned around to exit via junction 16.

A spokesman for National Highways Northwest said: “Traffic caught within the closure is still being turned around from the rear of the queue, but with lorries having to reverse back to junction 16, this will take some considerable time.

“Unfortunately, this is a lengthy and tedious process.

“The diversion route and all local surrounding roads are also very busy.”
