THE highly coveted Michelin stars were unveiled at a star-studded ceremony in Manchester last night (Monday) with restaurants in the region missing out on new accolades.

Some of the best chefs and restaurant owners were at the glittering event at The Midland Hotel in Manchester to discover who would be receiving a new Michelin star.

While local restaurants missed out on the new honours announced for 2024, the regional restaurants that already hold a Michelin star retained them for another 12 months.

The Ledbury in London headed by Brett Graham is now the holder of three Michelin stars and is in an elite group of restaurateurs that includes Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester in London, Clare Smyth at CORE and Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck in Bray as well as Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in London and Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume in Cartmel – which is slightly closer than the venues in the capital.

Moor Hall, Aughton

Moor Hall, Aughton

Aktar Islam’s Opheem in Birmingham is now the holder of two Michelin stars joining Moor Hall in Aughton headed by Mark Birchall – this stunning venue is just a short drive from Mid Cheshire.

Restaurants newly awarded one Michelin star were mainly in London and Ireland but all the regional restaurants that had previously been honoured retained their Michelin star – mana in Manchester, The Barn and sō–lō, which are both in Aughton, and Northcote in Langho – not too far to travel for a meal that's out of this world.

It was rumoured that mana in Manchester run by chef-owner Simon Martin might receive a second Michelin at last night’s awards ceremony.

Each of the tables at mana has a view of the kitchen and British produce leads the way with plenty of seafood as well as Asian techniques on display.

s?–l?, Aughton

s?–l?, Aughton

Sō–lō in Aughton is Tim Allen’s first solo venture having worked at various well-regarded restaurants around the country.

The brightly decorated and warmly run converted pub sees contemporary, seasonally pertinent dishes come with some unique touches.

He lets each flavour-packed core ingredient shine but also carefully considers the textures of each dish.

The Barn, Aughton

The Barn, Aughton

The Barn at Moor Hall – also in Aughton – is a rustic restored barn in the grounds of neighbouring Moor Hall with much of the seasonal produce coming from the five-acre grounds.

The airy dining room comes with exposed beams and an open kitchen and the cooking is modern and imaginative.

The appealing à la carte menu offers dishes which are British at heart, with understated elegance and well-judged combinations of punchy flavours.

Northcote, Langho

Northcote, Langho

Northcote in Langho in the Ribble Valley has Lisa Goodwin-Allen as executive chef and the cooking is underpinned by superb produce, which often comes from local, biodynamic and organic suppliers or their own kitchen garden.

This is fashioned into dishes with distinct, bold flavours brought together in complementary combinations.
