DRAMATIC photos have revealed the scale of a fire at a scrapyard.

Emergency services were called to W. R. Roberts and Sons in Northwich after a large blaze erupted.

With the flames now extinguished, investigations to determine what happened are set to get underway.

Howard Blain, a manager at W. R. Roberts and Sons, said: “We have had a very large and serious fire overnight.

“We would like to thank Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) for their amazing work throughout the night and today.

“Awesome job done by all firefighters.”

The metal processing firm has been closed as a result of the fire but will reopen on Tuesday (September 18).

The fire began shortly after 8pm on Sunday night (September 17).

One of the first to discover the blaze was Ashwood Park resident, Lesley Winnington.

She said: "Straight away I picked up the phone and called the park manager as you could see how high the flames were.

"You could hear cannisters popping and banging. You could hear explosions.

"It was just a bit worrying if anything came this way.”

Six CFRS crews attended the incident, from Birchwood, Knutsford, Middlewich, Northwich, Winsford and Lymm.

An aerial appliance from Lymm, a high reach extending turret from Macclesfield and a high-volume pump from Powey Lane were also sent to the scene while heavy machinery such as diggers were used to help move scrap.

Firefighters worked throughout the night to tackle the blaze, which was around 400 square metres in size and was mostly consisting of metal.

CFRS confirmed that the flames were finally extinguished by 12.45pm on Monday (September 18).

Shortly before 3pm, CFRS provided the following update: "The incident has now been reduced to one fire engine.

"A ground monitor is still in use."

It is understood an investigation will take place now that the fire has been dealt with.

Cheshire Police were also called to the scene, with Chapel Lane closed in both directions.

Meanwhile, a North West Ambulance Service spokesman has confirmed there were no injuries reported from the incident.
