DAVENHAM Cricket Club men's team were among those starting their new season today.

Debuts were expected from Mo Abid and overseas recruit Jason V.D. Muelen against Haslington.

Also, Dean Jackson has made an eagerly awaited return to the fold.

Josh Sharples has been promoted to the first XI from the second team after strong pre-season efforts and form.

Meabwhile, £4,800 was raised at Davenham Cricket Club's annual beer festival earlier this month.

A club official said: "The festival was amazing and we would like to thank everyone who helped set up, drink beer, donate prizes, club and beer sponsors, and all our fantastic volunteers and staff. We simply couldn't do this event without each and every one of you.

"We raised a staggering £4,800, which we will invest in our club and facilities to support our players and local community.

"Our main focus this year is to replace our practice nets, bringing them up to standard. We also want to expand from two to three nets to gain more capacity, as we support our ever increasing women's and children's teams.

"Special thanks to our main club sponsors Harveys the Jewellers, The Beer Trading Company and Oscars Pet Foods (Knutsford). Thank you all for being amazing and supporting your local cricket club."
