WITTON Albion manager Jon Macken was happy with his side’s performance despite Crewe Alexandra knocking them out of the Cheshire Senior Cup second round, ending their eight-game unbeaten streak, writes Ben Wade.

Crewe went 2-0 up with goals from Zak Kempster-Down and Marquise Martins in the 41st and 73rd minutes.

Will Igoe thought he had bagged a goal for Witton in the second half, but was marginally offside.

Connor Hughes was able to pull one back in the 85th minute but it was too late for Albion.

Macken was disappointed with the result and conceding what he described as ‘two sloppy goals’ but praised his boys’ performance after going behind.

“I was really pleased with the reaction after we went 2-0 down,” said Macken.

“That’s exactly what you want to see. Instead of thinking is it going to be three or four, we really got on the ball and tried to control the game so I’m really pleased.”

The Witton boss said he was keen to re-watch Igoe’s disallowed goal to see if the decision was correct or not, but was quick to focus on the highs of the game.

“Although the result isn’t what we want, the performance was really good. I got minutes for lads who have not had as much as they’ve wanted and lads who are coming back from illness and injuries.”
