A SHOOTING happened at Leftwich on Saturday. As corn cutting neared completion, Thomas Moss and his son Herbert were on the lookout for rabbits. Each was armed with a gun. Suddenly the horses attached to the machine showed signs of restiveness and Herbert turned to go to them. His gun accidentally went off and the contents lodged his elbow, shattering it. His father arrested the haemorrhage by tying some binding twine round the upper part of his arm.

RAILWAY robberies in Northwich during the last four years in which whisky, jam and butter have been purloined were spoken of at the Northwich Police Court on Friday when James Hulse, 27, of Cogshall, was charged with stealing 28lbs of margarine valued at £1 6s. He was fined £5.

50 years ago

A 74-YEAR-OLD cyclist Ernest Gleave, of Chester Road, Castle, received slight injuries when involved in a collision with a lorry on Witton Street on Thursday last week.

Northwich is to receive a visit from an official minesweeper HMS Upton, fully manned by six officers and 30 ratings. The visit on October 14 is to enable school parties to see over the minesweeper and talk to the officers and men. The ship will sail up to Northwich on the River Weaver and be berthed in the town on both days.

A DRUNKEN solicitor was more than four times over the legal drink drive limit when police spotted him driving on the wrong side of the road, Warrington magistrates were told. The 51-year-old had been drinking after meeting up with old friends. The Whitegate resident admitted driving with excess alcohol. Magistrates indicated they were considering a custodial sentence after hearing that he was convicted of a similar offence in 1989.

Extensions are to be built at Great Budworth Village Hall to improve facilities. Planning permission was applied for by the parish council for extensions to the main hall and toilet and kitchen areas. Five new parking spaces will also be created.
