The stories making the headlines 100 years ago...

100 YEARS AGO:

AN AEROPLANE caught the attention of Winnington residents, and the surrounding districts, this week as it fell from the sky.

The Guardian reported that the pilot had faced engine troubles, lost control of the plane at 4,500ft and veered off its original course.

The man was lucky to escape the crash site with minor cuts and bruises after landing in an oat field belonging to a farmer.

An air mechanic from Little Leigh happened to be in the area at the time and on his way home to see family during military leave and offered to assist in the repairing the aircraft.

50 YEARS AGO:

CHILDREN were asked to write in to the Northwich Guardian about what they thought the world would look like in the future, with youngsters making a wide range of interesting suggestions.

One child suggested that families would live in a community of underwater cities connected by tunnels – thinking it would be a good solution to making the most of the space available.

They showed real thought by suggesting more tunnels could be built for air and food supplies.

An alternative suggestion made by a group of children working together included building cities in the skies. They thought about building long ladders for people to return to the ground and gather food and how living above the clouds meant no more rain.

25 YEARS AGO:

THE carnival queen for Northwich was left ‘devastated’ following a technical error with the filming of her crowning ceremony.

In what was described as a ‘technical hiccup’ by volunteers working on the project, footage that showed Paula Barrow receive the top title at the traditional celebrations was completely destroyed.

Halfway through the event, the camera stopped working and none of the tape could be recovered.

The distraught teenager and her mother lodged an appeal in the Guardian for people to share any videos they may have taken on the day that included the crowning ceremony.
