VILLAGERS in Wincham are being asked to show their support for a memorial to servicemen and women who gave their lives in war.

Carvings have been made for display in the garden, which is being created in Linnards Lane by the Friends of Linnards Lane Park group.

The pieces were created by Wilmslow-based sculptor Keith Carter-Harris, who created designs on Portland stone featuring a dove with an olive branch and a poppy.

Cllr Annie Makepeace said: “In recognition of the centenary of the First World War, the parish council embarked on building a war memorial and garden. All was in hand when we were advised that a parish council was not permitted to fund or create a war memorial, only maintain an existing one.”

Wincham Parish Council was told it does not have the right to create the garden because of a legal Act which was passed in the 1920s.

Annie added: “The project is half complete, and we desperately need to raise funds to complete before November 11th. We’ve had little old ladies donating a few pounds, and some larger donations from businesses but we have so little time now.”

The war memorial plaques are currently at Wincham Community Primary School after St Andrew’s, in Church Street, was demolished for housing.

Anyone who wishes to support the memorial project or has any suggestions they would like to see added to memorial, is asked to email nacnac.mott@googlemail.com or pakamak@icloud.com.
