ONE of the most colourful events of the year gets under way on Wednesday - the 12th Whitegate Daffodil Farm open days.

The event, organised by father and daughter, Len Tomlinson and Gail Jackson, has so far raised £57,262 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The 35-acre Farm at Foxwist Green, Whitegate has been home to Len and Gail’s family for more than 300 years, and the first daffodils were planted there in 1890. Today there are 600 varieties, covering eight acres.

Gail said: “My dad has been planting for 70 years and last autumn planted a further 2,000 bulbs to expand the woodland display and continue the survival of the rare varieties. Historically the flowers were traditionally cut by hand and sold in local shops and markets plus Manchester Wholesale Market.

“Sadly it became no longer commercially viable to do this, however we have continued welcoming friends and daffodil enthusiasts from all over the world to visit the farm and enjoy what we have enjoyed for years.

Len’s wish to expand this came after losing his best friend following a long battle with cancer and experienced the support that Macmillan offered. Hence in 2007 the first daffodil tour was held raising £330 the rest, as they say, is history.

Gail said: “The success relies on support from local businesses, willing volunteers and donations of cakes and tombola items. We always welcome new volunteers too so if anyone can spare a few hours to help it is much appreciated.”

The open days - from 10am to 4pm - run until April 8.

Entrance is £2 adults and £1 children. For a donation visitors can do a self guided walk or at 10.30am enjoy a guided tour, for which booking required. Len guides visitors for 90 minutes and talks about the history of the farm, salt subsidence caused by the nearby Winsford Salt mines and shows daffodils dating back to the 1500s.

There is also a Fairy Trail for younger visitors who will enjoy a visit to The Magic Oak and the Fairy Village. With a fabulous selection of home baked cakes and drinks to enjoy it makes for a unique and enjoyable way to enjoy our beautiful piece of Cheshire countryside whilst raising some money for a worthwhile cause.
