ENTHUSIASTIC runners are planning the town’s first official 5km race.

Run Middlewich has been granted permission by the town council to set up an adult competition and children’s fun run.

The group needs £2,000 to cover event costs and is on the lookout for local sponsors.

Mandy Taylor, Run Middlewich committee member, said: “It has all progressed really quickly. What was initially a small idea now seems to be a reality.

“The two founders of the group, Darren Roberts and Stuart Eustace, worked really hard to run the Couch to 5K programme which has been well attended both times.

“But when it came to participating in races everyone had to travel to neighbouring towns and we think it would be better to bring people to Middlewich instead.

“We think this will be a great way to showcase how beautiful the place is that we live in. There is nowhere like it especially when the weather is nice.

“We’re looking for a main sponsor and then smaller contributions from other businesses. This will cover all the set-up, an official timer, medals and t-shirts at the finish line."

Run Middlewich has applied for an event licence and has chosen April as a suitable month for the race.

Dave Thompson, Middlewich Town Council event organiser, said: “It’s an absolutely fantastic idea from the group and I’m looking forward to meeting them and hearing what they have planned.

“I think people being proactive like this is the best way forward. If residents get behind it then the event will generate its own sustainability and it will be great to see.

“I hope it gets the support it deserves and that the participants get the good weather they want on the day.”

Proceeds raised from the event will be donated to St Luke’s Hospice.
