CONFUSING speed limit signs in Little Leigh will be reviewed in the new year after residents expressed their concern about them.

The Guardian reported earlier this month that motorists had been left baffled by a national speed limit section of Shutley Lane which lasts just a few metres, after the speed limit in Runcorn Road was reduced to 50mph on August 16.

Resident Ian Smith said the 'dangerous' signs were like 'a scene from Monty Python' – but now Cheshire West and Chester Council has said it will review the road in January.

Cllr Karen Shore, CWAC cabinet member for environment, said: “The new signage follows a change of speed limit on the A533 Runcorn Road, Little Leigh after a request to assess the road between Dutton and Barnton. The highways report recommended a 50mph limit on the A533 Runcorn Road.

“The new national speed limit sign is a legal requirement to inform drivers that the speed limit has changed as they turn into Shutley Lane. On the reverse of this sign, drivers approaching Runcorn Road are informed of the new 50mph limit.

“Highways surveys are scheduled to take place in Little Leigh village in January as part of the Council’s 20 mph implementation programme – this assessment will include the short length of Shutley Lane, which is currently unrestricted."
