IT was a garden created for those in need of an escape, but in the end it had the crowds flocking to it.

Arley’s Thyme to Retreat – designed by James Youd – proved a hit with the public and judges at the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park who awarded it a Silver-Gilt.

For first time designer James, who took his inspiration from the gardens at Arley Hall where he has worked for 13 years, it was a reward for months of planning, inspiration and hard graft.

“It is incredible to receive a Silver Gilt,” he said.

“Also to hear all the positive comments from the public is amazing because I really wanted this to be a garden that people could imagine relaxing in at home after a hard day at work.”

The garden was crammed full of plants in pastel shades from pink roses to blue and white agapanthus. Their fragrances were chosen to help the mind and body unwind in line with the show’s theme of health and wellbeing.

At it’s centre was an arbour echoing one that sits in the Kitchen Garden at Arley Hall

There were many personal touches to James’ garden too.

The book that rested on the bench was his favourite novel, Three Men In A Boat, and the copy was one his father Sam had read to his children when they were young.

Alpine strawberries were dotted around the border reminding James of summer days picking – and eating – strawberries in his back garden as a boy.

The overall impact grabbed the attention from visitors, many saying it was their favourite garden in the show.

“I’m overwhelmed with the response and it certainly has inspired me to do this again next year,” James added.
