WHILE breakfast in Britain may be more elegant than in the past, sometimes you just can't beat a good old fashioned bacon butty.

Whether it's red or brown, toasted or on fresh bread, a bacon sandwich is a staple that isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

The classic breakfast has been a particular favourite of tradespeople for many years.

As part of a nationwide competition, tradespeople were asked by Ironmongery Direct to nominate the business they feel makes the country’s best bacon sandwich.

After receiving hundreds of entries for the competition, Castle Café in Northwich has been crowned one of the ten winners from across the country.

Halil Caliskan, Castle Café owner, said: “We are very proud to be chosen by the customers, we have very good customers.

“I had no idea we had been nominated.

"Whoever did it – thank you very much. As a business this is brilliant, I am very proud this has happened for us.”

So what makes Castle Café’s sandwich stand out from the rest?

“If someone wants to eat something they must wait, everything is cooked as we go," Halil said.

"Everything is fresh and all of our ingredients are from local suppliers.

“If you speak to my suppliers you will get loads of bad reviews from them for me because I always try to improve always – better, better, better.”

The competition was launched following recent research by Ironmongery Direct, which found that the classic bacon sandwich is the breakfast of choice for our nation’s tradespeople.

Wayne Lysaght-Mason, managing director at Ironmongery Direct, said: “Bacon sandwiches are a classic breakfast choice for those on the go, which explains why they have been named as the snack of choice by the UK’s tradespeople.

“We know that a tradesperson’s job can be physically demanding, so it’s important to kick-start the day with a hearty breakfast.

“That’s why we launched our competition to find those breakfast heroes who provide the perfect sandwich to keep our nation of workers powering on throughout the day.

“Now tradespeople across the country can visit our dedicated Butty map so they can get their hands on a good breakfast wherever their work takes them.”

The other winning establishments include JoJo’s Breakfast Bar in Gloucester, Burger Dan’s in Norwich, Giltbrook Cob Shop in Nottingham, Sparks Will Fry in Widnes, The Kitchen Table in West Hamstead, Ockham Bites in Surrey, Straw Kitchen in Warwickshire, the Lunch Box in Kent and Hackney City Farm in London.

All 10 winners have been placed on to a dedicated Bacon Butty map, which highlights where in the UK tradespeople can get their hands on the best bacon sandwiches.
