DADS are in for a rare treat at the Anderton Boat Lift in more ways than one.

On Sunday, June 18, the Boat Lift is offering a Father’s Day ‘Top of the World’ tour of the Lift, including a rarely-available trip to the top.

If a family of three or more books to go on the tour, dad gets in for free.

The Lift is the world’s first successful boat lift, and the tour is a special chance to enjoy and learn about this magnificent example of high Victorian engineering.

Tours run at 10.30am, 12pm and 2.30pm, and advanced booking is required. Tickets cost £10. For more information or to book call 01606 786 777.

The Boat Lift allows boats to move between the 50-foot drop which separates the Trent and Mersey Canal and the River Weaver Navigation.

Graham Wood, duty manager, said: “This is a wonderful experience and would make a really memorable Father’s Day gift.

“This family tour would appeal to anyone with a head for heights who likes something a bit different or anyone with an interest in engineering, history or canals.

Children will be permitted on the tour, though it is not usually suitable for children under 15.”

Father of three Phil Pownall said: “I’ve never been to the Anderton Boat Lift before and my tour around and to the top of the Lift was a revelation.

“It is awe-inspiring being at the top of the lift and looking through metal structure at the boats going up and down the lift.”
